Sea of Souls
“ Sea of Souls” is 8 yards of screen printed fabric. It consists of photographs I took on the roof of a parking garage of people walking in downtown Savannah, Georgia. I always loved photography and wanted to incorporate some of my own in my work.
This piece is meant to convey the busy and bustling nature of cities, sometimes overwhelming from an observer’s perspective.
I’ve always been an observer in spaces where faces feel unfamiliar. I am spellbound, imagining what each person has going on in their personal lives; what they go home to, or what their stories are.
Downtown brings people from all over the place. I stood on top of the parking garage near where I used to work at the time, and captured people walking in a transitional space, holding briefcases, leftovers from restaurants, and shopping bags. It is very telling what someone is doing in a city if you just look.
People walking in couples, groups, or walking alone.
Relationships are on display.
A street where people create a chaotic flow of shadows.
A street where people from hundreds of places merge in a state of disarray.
